Olfynatmaa VOLUME IV W. P, GRIER JR. HIGH SCHOOL GASTONIA. NORTH CAROLINA, DECFMBER 1970 NQ^ ELEcnm, EiEETms, EiEcnm^. Haue a THOUGHTS FOR CHRISTMAS In a few days we will be getting out of school for the Christmas holidays. We are all thinking of presents, visits, dressing and turkey, and being away from school. But is this all that Christmas is about, or is there another side? There definitely is another side to Christmas. It is really celebrat'ng the birth of Christ. Christmas is really a time to think about the life and teachings of Christ. It’s a time to be merry, not because of receiving gifts alone, but because Christ was born. With all the excitement caused by Christmas, I think most of it comes from getting out of school and receiving gifts. I agree it’s enjoyable receiving gifts, but 1 think that we should also be serious about Christmas because of its religious aspects. We put too much emphasis on the material Christmas and not enough emphasis on the religious Christmas. For example, we run around shopping for gifts and suitable presents for our friends and relatives, but do we even stop to wonder if we are going to church on Christmas day or read from the Bible the story of the birth of Christ? This Christmas let’s think about Christ a little more than we have been and see if we do not have a merrier Christmas. TREASURER ELECTION It all seemed to start after the Thanksgiving holidays, as we began to notice campaign posters, slogans and buttons showing up around the school. The holidays provided a good time for the candidates to prepare for the upcoming election week. The candidates running for the office were: Debbie Bradshaw, Jane Ameen, Dusty Gray, and Anita Tedder. The campaign managers were (in same order) Crystal Barnhill, Nikki Phillips, Shawn Gray, and Cindy Lindsay. The week passed quickly for all involved and on Friday, December 4, the final phase of each candi dates campaign began: the speeches. The assembly was opened by the president, Frank Skidmore. Devotions were given by Debbie Fussell and Iris Zeitlin who also led the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, Scott Neshiem, head of the elections committee, introduced each campaign manager who talked for a few minutes and in turn introduced their candidates. After many good speeches and humorous skits the assembly was closed by Frank, the rest was left up to the student body. That afternoon ballots were passed out in home rooms with the winner to be announced at the seventh grade dance that night. The winner was Dusty Gray, who happened to be the only boy running! Dusty lives on 1901 Armstrong Park Road and is an only child. His hobbies and likes include coin collecting, basketball, Davidson, and math. He dislikes lots of homework, history, and Duke. We congratulate Dusty on his victory and wish him success in his new office! NEW ARRIVALS 9tli GRADE CLASS OFFICERS With the end of November came the election of class officers for the 9th Grade. Running were candidates for President, Vice- president, Secretary, and Trea surer. It took three ballot counts before the results were finally tabulated. The contest has never been so close. Ken Holland was elected president; Shawn Gray, Vice- president; Bryant Bolin, secretary; and Randy Whitehurst, treasurer. But the voting was close and an advisory committee was formed from the close runners. It is made up of: Cindy Lindsay Nikki Phillips Kim Flint Mike Carpenter Amy Dickson Tryone Felder Their Job is to help the class officers with the end of the year prom and the Last Will and Testament.
